When we mother ourselves with the same patience and gentleness we offer our children, everything begins to shift.

(And yes, I know, we aren’t always the patient, gentle parents we want to be with our kids, either. We are a work in progress. You, me, them. But this concept still holds true)

You’ve got this, mama.

Joy Experiment #1 – What Did You Leave Behind?

What is that thing you left behind—

that thing you’ve tucked away for “someday”?
The one you imagine doing
on holidays,
when you retire,
when the stars align?

Is it a musical instrument?
Reading for hours?
Painting?
Decorating the house?
Going on walks?
Running a marathon?

Wandering?

What is it, joy-seeker?

Here is a recipe to find out:

Take off your shoes.
Step into the grass.
(Or imagine doing so.)

Breathe.

Let your mind time-travel.
Your heart knows the answer.

Have you visited her recently—
that beautiful space under your ribs?

Put your hand there.
Breathe in deeply.
Fill up those luscious lungs.
Let a gentle smile form
on your sweet lips.

Breathe in.
Let the answer come.

Sometimes,
a small hop on one foot
can help

(A little playfulness never hurts).

Whisper the answer.

And if you still don’t know,
simply say,
“I’m listening,”
to your heart.

Your beautiful heart.

It may need more time to trust
that you’re really there—
listening,
waiting.

Come back.
Later today,
later this week,
later this month.

Just come back.

 he answer is there.
You will find it.

And once it comes,

hold it gently,

with curiosity,

with tenderness.

Let tears come

if grief accompanies the answer

Action steps are for another time.
